Mobility scooters allow many thousands of people around the UK to enjoy a degree of independence that would otherwise simply not be possible.
The importance of being able to get out and about in comfort cannot be overstated – whether it’s for a trip to the shops or just to get a breath of fresh air and change of scenery – and mobility scooters offer a convenient and affordable way of doing this. Have you ever considered, however, what to do if you break down in your mobility scooter?
The possibility of being away from home and suddenly having our only form of transport taken away is not something any of us would like to think about, but it is vital that we know in advance what to do if such an incident occurs. Fortunately, when it comes to mobility scooters, you will find that there will always be help on hand if the worst were to happen.
How does a mobility scooter recovery service work?
If you have been wondering what to do if you break down in your mobility scooter, you will be reassured to learn that there are not many differences between the recovery services you may have previously used as a car owner and those available for scooters.
As with roadside assistance for cars, all reputable mobility scooter breakdown cover policies should allow the user to call on the expert help of a mechanic 24/7, 365 days a year – whatever the problem may be. It is important to remember, however, that there is likely to be a limit on the number of times such assistance can be called out during a one-year period, so it’s not a good idea to purchase an old scooter which is in poor condition and liable to break down at any time!
Other important issues to be aware of when considering taking out a breakdown policy include the fact that you will usually be required to make the recovery company know if you change your mobility scooter at any point, as well as several other limitations and exclusions which should, for most people, just be common sense. For example, there are not many companies out there who would be willing to help when asking them what to do if you break down in your mobility scooter when your vehicle has been left unattended, is covered in mud or snow, or is many miles away from its registered address.
Is there AA for mobility scooters?
As you have probably already gathered from the information above, there are a surprisingly large number of companies which provide comprehensive breakdown cover for mobility scooters like those available for cars from services such as the AA.
Below, you will find some brief information about three UK companies that will all be able to tell you what to do if you break down in your mobility scooter and should also send out immediate recovery assistance.
Known for their ethical approach to every area of their business, it should come as no surprise that the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) provides one of the most comprehensive and transparent mobility scooter breakdown and recovery services available.
Boasting more than 5,000 recovery trucks available 24/7 and an average response time of under 40 minutes, the ETA can reliably claim to be among the UK’s most comprehensive mobility scooter cover providers. With policies starting from £39 per year, ETA’s basic package is ever so slightly more expensive than those of the other providers on our list, but the difference in price is negligible when the peace of mind provided by their expert team is considered.
ETA openly state on their website that there are several situations in which their recovery services cannot be used, although the fact that they display this so clearly is a mark of their trustworthiness in itself! Customers will not be able to use ETA’s home rescue service to charge or replace a flat battery, mechanical problems which cost more than £250 to resolve will not be covered, and you will need to wait 24 hours before requesting your first call-out.
As specialists in providing several different kinds of disability-related insurance, Chartwell Insurance is a good choice for those who feel they would get more peace of mind from being covered by a team who are likely to have dealt with every possible kind of mobility scooter breakdown in the past.
With policies starting at just £37 per year, Chartwell is another company which won’t break the bank should you decide to purchase your breakdown cover through them. Plus, customers will also benefit from the complimentary hire of another scooter should theirs require repairs that cannot be carried out at your home or wherever you may have broken down. This will no doubt be a particularly attractive feature for those who really value their independence and are worried about not being able to get out of the house for days on end.
Chartwell Insurance also offers comprehensive mobility scooter insurance, but you do not need to be a policyholder to sign up to their breakdown cover service.
Finally, Eden Mobility over the cheapest basic breakdown cover of the three providers we have covered here, at £34.95 per year. However, although the company states that they offer the ‘most affordable’ cover in the UK, there are a few stipulations that potential customers should be aware of before signing up.
The team at Eden Mobility will be able to tell you what to do if you break down in your mobility scooter and their mechanics – unless it is a serious fault – should also get you moving again as soon as possible, but their conditions also specify that they will only provide this service ‘without charge’ for up to 30 minutes. If the maintenance takes more than half an hour to carry out, additional charges will apply.
Also, although Eden do offer a taxi service back to home for those whose mobility scooters break down when out and about, this will only be complimentary up to 20 miles from the scooter’s registered address.
